The solar fireworks at the weekend were recorded by several satellites, including Nasa’s new Solar Dynamics Observatory which watched its shock wave rippling outwards.

Astronomers from all over the world witnessed the huge flare above a giant sunspot the size of the Earth, which they linked to an even larger eruption across the surface of Sun.

The explosion, called a coronal mass ejection, was aimed directly towards Earth, which then sent a “solar tsunami” racing 93 million miles across space.

Images from the SDO hint at a shock wave travelling from the flare into space, the New Scientist reported.
Experts said the wave of supercharged gas will likely reach the Earth on Tuesday, when it will buffet the natural magnetic shield protecting Earth.

It is likely to spark spectacular displays of the aurora or northern and southern lights.
"This eruption is directed right at us," said Leon Golub, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).
"It's the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time."

Scientists have warned that a really big solar eruption could destroy satellites and wreck power and communications grids around the globe if it happened today.

Nasa recently warned that Britain could face widespread power blackouts and be left without critical communication signals for long periods of time, after the earth is hit by a once-in-a-generation “space storm”.
The Daily Telegraph disclosed in June that senior space agency scientists believed the Earth will be hit with unprecedented levels of magnetic energy from solar flares after the Sun wakes “from a deep slumber” sometime around 2013.

It remains unclear, however, how much damage this latest eruption will cause the world’s communication tools.
Dr Lucie Green, of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, Surrey, followed the flare-ups using Japan's orbiting Hinode telescope.

"What wonderful fireworks the Sun has been producing,” the UK solar expert said.
“This was a very rare event – not one, but two almost simultaneous eruptions from different locations on the sun were launched toward the Earth.

"These eruptions occur when immense magnetic structures in the solar atmosphere lose their stability and can no longer be held down by the Sun's huge gravitational pull. Just like a coiled spring suddenly being released, they erupt into space.”

She added: "It looks like the first eruption was so large that it changed the magnetic fields throughout half the Sun's visible atmosphere and provided the right conditions for the second eruption.
"Both eruptions could be Earth-directed but may be travelling at different speeds.

“This means we have a very good chance of seeing major and prolonged effects, such as the northern lights at low latitudes."link (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/space/7923069/Nasa-scientists-braced-for-solar-tsunami-to-hit-earth.html)

Watch for the Aurora Borealis tonight if you have clear skies!

OP, there's is a program I use called Tagalicious. You just open it, select songs that are missing information, and it attempts to dig up the information on that song. Once finds the information you're missing, you can choose what to send (e.g., send lyrics, but not artwork, etc) to your iTunes Library. It's been able to identify all but a few of the 400+ songs I have in my library...it was even able to get tags for songs with no name, album, or any information on them whatsoever.

    Well I'll be darned....

When Arn e-mailed me a couple months ago (and I was insanely busy and had very little time to post), I had no idea what was going on to prompt him to e-mail me to come back to MR.

I posted a few times on the Nov 5th rumor thread, and sadly found myself frustrated with the folks there. I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but compared to what I remember from over a year ago, the proportion of folks who were irritating (i.e., "trolls" to use our lingo) was way too high. I got frustrated and stopped posting...especially because I realized that all my posts were taking me way off topic replying to the trolls!

So then I just came here tonight, checking out what was new, etc...and I find this forum -- a hangout for those of us who were around long ago. Too cool!

Great idea, Arn. Now if we could just boost the membership in here back up. I'd enjoy that a lot. Truthfully, I find myself reading MacNN a lot, but the discussions are far less spirited there.

    Let's rev this place up!

    Hi,
I have two internet connections here, one via GBit-Ethernet to my Mac Mini and a slower one connected to my WiFi router. I just bought a wireless printer, thus I need to connect the Mini to the WiFi to print.

I think this is not explicitly specified, but which connection will be used to route to the internet? It would be unfortunate to use the WiFi, as it's about 5 times slower.

Can I set the wired connection to be default for all connections, and route only the traffic that really has to go into the WiFi? All that comes to mind at the moment is removing the gateway/router address.

    Better ideas?
i take it your taking static routes you could bond them together but thats hard and kinda pointlesss id get rid of the dsl conection stick the gige line into the router bridge that to wifi and wire in the pc/mac to the same router done

    You keep posting this drivel.
This is not a new iPhone only a new color.
There is nothing any more spectacular about it.
We black iPhone users have been using it for 10 months now.

Relax. Let the man enjoy his new phone.

I picked up a white one also, switching from a 3GS. Sure, played around with other friends' i4 but actually ownership is great.

    Dear Colleagues,

My first post here and I also apologize if this is the wrong forum. If you know of a more appropriate forum/website please let me know.

I'm authoring a CD-ROM that contains a website with images, videos, PDFs etc... This CD-ROM (essentially a "Website on Disc") will be mass replicated and sold as part of a book.

The client would like to implement some sort of copy protection that will make it difficult for people to just copy the CD or it's contents. I have been researching this for a long time now and have learned that there are many different products out there that can "supposedly" achieve this. However, due to the sheer number, I'd like to know if anyone can recommend or share his/her experiences and thoughts on the subject. To make things even trickier, is there such a solution that will prevent copying on both Mac and PC systems?

Thanks in advance for any insight!
    Regards

Don't bother. No matter what you do both the book and the CD will be on the internet for download within a week. Just accept it and move on without wasting any extra money on a lost cause.

You could probably take what you need scanned to a service bereau, they'd probably do a better job than anything the average home user would. Just make sure they're reputable and use equipment that's better han what they use at walgreens :p

Well, it's mostly games, which is a pity. I know it's not a gaming laptop but they do sell them through Steam, so I'd like to buy them.

The way you say it, it seems related to the extra power provided by the SB processor. So there seem to be three solutions.

    1. Undervolting, which isn't possible right now.

    2. Downgrading, and, as in the MacBook Air, fixing another kind of bottleneck (HD operation).

    3. Better cooling through termal paste, more fans, cooling pad, etc.

Am I right here? I'd like to know more about this CPU+GPU combo in the same core, because I read it lead to further heating. Is there any truth to this?

Just because it's on steam doesn't mean you need to buy the game... Furthermore, like with Windows, you need to see if the requirements match your system or it'll run poorly.

Under volt is possible. It's pointless though especially if you're stressing the system then the fan will come on or your system will shut down

Downgrade is up to you. But any system, you stress it, fans will come on

Cooling pad just adds to the noise. You can attempt a thermal paste change but like I said, games will cause the system to run fans at max to keep it a good temperature.

It's not so much of a CPU + GPU combo, it's the heat generated by both parts of the die concentrated on a single heatsink. To be honest the older systems genereated about the same amount of wattage wasted in heat so it's not too big of a difference

I dont think Apple will slap it into Powerbook, it just seems 2 big for it (phisical size). Remember, PBs are 1 inch think and are getting 20-40 % smaller with Intel!

Is it really that big? It measures about 1.8" by 1.8", and the package includes both GPU and 128 MB RAM. I forget how big 9700 was, but X1600 should be smaller.

...The Wii really is just a portable DS in so many ways...

I know the Wii is small but more portable than the DS?

I'll xth the Target recommendation from this thread. Mine came from Target, with the help of some co-workers, and the only stories I've ever heard of people seeing them on the shelves were at Target.

They are definitely doing something right, heck my mother-in-law knows what a Wii is (even how to spell it) and that's really out of the ordinary for her.

Thanks for the replies, anyways, guys. Guess I'll have to keep holding on to it.

Actually, I have a soft spot for the 040 CPU machines. If you want an addictive game for it, try Apeiron (http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/apeiron/).

I loved the Sony Trinitron tube they used, compared to the el-cheapo Performa 580 which used cheaper tubes.

Keep it. I'm keeping mine (about 4 of them). They're good for many color games (of the time). :D

I'm guessing it is something with no-ip then, what happens if you try to access the pictures via the IP address and port (if you are using no-ip to forward to a port other than port 80)?

The problem still persists when I use the IP address... good thinking though, I was hoping beyond hope that you'd be right...

NetNewsWire is one of the apps I use most on my Mac. They do have an web app designed for the iPhone at m.newsgator.com which wonderfully keeps all my subscriptions in sync between their full web interface (which I use at work), NetNewsWire (on my Mac at home) and my iPhone. I can't imagine a better setup and now that NewNewsWire is free, I am a happy camper.

I love them both.. i get hiped up 2 wweeks before macworld and just go nuts and just sit on the computer and get all the information and rumors about them i love it!!!:apple::apple:

I'm quite lucky because I'm normally in university til 6PM (UK time), and MacWorld is 5PM (UK time), but this week, I finish at 4PM so I will be glued to my computer for the updates via here, and then go out for dinner, and then when I come back, the keynote video should be available on Apple.com

I wonder if we're finishing early because my lecturer is as excited as we are... maybe he's a secret Mac fan
